What is the percentage of US high school students who identify as non-heterosexual and how does it relate to mental health issues?

According to a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of US high school students who identify as homosexual, bisexual, or 'questioning' has more than doubled since 2015.

The report shows that about a quarter of teens between the ages of 14 and 18 do not identify as straight, with 12% identifying as bisexual and 9% as 'other' or 'questioning' their sexuality. This rise in non-hetero identification coincides with a similar rise in mental health issues.

However, experts suggest that this may be due to more people feeling comfortable being open about their sexual orientation and identities, particularly among the younger generation who are frequently online.

The report highlights the need for schools to create a more inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ students and notes that many such students experience poor mental health, substance abuse, sexual violence, bullying, and suicidal thoughts or behaviors.
