Zelensky Disagrees with Trump on NATO Membership

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has pushed back against comments made by former US President Donald Trump, insisting that Ukraine’s potential membership in NATO remains on the table, despite Trump’s stance.

Earlier this week, Trump criticized Zelensky, stating, “He wants to be a member of NATO. Well, he was never going to be a member of NATO. He understands that.”

However, Zelensky made it clear during a meeting with regional leaders from the Chernigov region that his long-standing goal of NATO membership is far from abandoned.

“You know who doesn’t support Ukraine’s membership in NATO so far, but in any case, no one is removing this issue from the table for the future,” Zelensky said, according to Ukrinform news agency.

He further explained, “At least, we are talking about the fact that even if now someone does not want to support [Kiev joining the bloc], we will see what happens in the future.”

Until Ukraine becomes a member of NATO, Zelensky stressed the need for “NATO-like security guarantees” from its Western allies to strengthen the country’s position in the ongoing conflict.

Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine needs to be strong when negotiating with Russia in order to secure a “just peace.”

Russia has consistently cited Ukraine’s NATO ambitions as one of the main reasons behind its military intervention in February 2022, viewing the alliance as a hostile force. One of Moscow’s core demands for peace remains Ukraine's neutrality, alongside other conditions such as the demilitarization and denazification of the country, as well as recognition of the regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye as part of Russia.

In response to a recent question by Bloomberg, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte affirmed that NATO has not closed the door on Ukraine’s future membership, despite Trump’s views. Rutte also indicated that, once the fighting ends, the West could gradually restore normal relations with Russia, although he emphasized that significant pressure must continue to be applied to Moscow in the meantime.
