Toronto residents are being advised to stay indoors on Wednesday afternoon as a winter storm approaches the city. Environment Canada issued a warning just after 4:45 a.m., stating that the storm will hit the city late Wednesday afternoon and may bring up to 15 centimeters of precipitation, including a mix of snow, ice, and rain. The alert cautioned that surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways, and parking lots will become icy, slippery, and hazardous. Residents are advised to take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas, as there may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas.
According to the warning, the storm will bring snow and then ice pellets on Wednesday evening. Precipitation could turn into freezing rain overnight before tapering off on Thursday. Environment Canada has issued several severe weather warnings across Ontario, including a freezing rain warning in Hamilton and a snowfall warning in Ottawa.
The bus company for the Peel District School Board and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board announced in a tweet that school buses will still operate on Wednesday. A spokesperson for the city of Toronto said that warming centers at Metro Hall, Scarborough Civic Centre, Cecil Community Centre, and Mitchell Field Community Centre will be open at 7 p.m. The city also stated that liquid salt brine was applied overnight to expressways, bridges, steep hills, and priority intersections across the city.
Salting will begin as the snow accumulates, with plows deployed once specific amounts of snow have fallen on expressways, major roads, transit routes, streets with hills, and residential streets. Operations to clear the precipitation are expected to continue throughout the weekend.
The TTC Line 3 Scarborough SRT will be replaced with buses once the weather turns into a snow event. The TTC also plans to take 41 bus stops in hilly areas that are difficult for buses to travel on in snow and ice out of service by 5 p.m. The TTC will be storing subway trains in tunnels along main lines to prevent issues related to trains leaving the transit agency's yards.
Flight delays are expected, with airports and airlines, including Air Canada and WestJet, issuing warnings for travelers who are traveling to Toronto, Ottawa, or Montreal. As of the time of writing, Pearson Airport has canceled 183 flights, with 256 reported delays.
In conclusion, residents of Toronto are being urged to exercise caution during winter storms. They are advised to stay indoors as much as possible and to take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas.
