The US government has made all classified records about the assassination of former President John F. Kennedy available to the public, the National Archives has confirmed.
The administration of President Donald Trump released thousands of pages of documents related to JFK’s killing in Dallas, Texas, on November 22, 1963. The National Archives uploaded approximately 63,000 pages on its website in two initial batches on Tuesday, with more files set to be published once digitization is complete.
“All records previously withheld for classification that are part of the President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection are released,” the National Archives stated.
Shortly after taking office, Trump signed an executive order to declassify government documents pertaining to the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, his brother Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.
The assassination of JFK has long fueled speculation about possible government involvement. A 2023 Gallup poll found that 65% of Americans doubted the official conclusion that former US Marine Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. Of those surveyed, 20% believed Oswald conspired with the US government, while another 16% suspected the CIA’s involvement.
Trump told reporters on Monday that “people have been waiting decades” for the release of these files, adding that around 80,000 pages of previously classified records would be made public. “I said during the campaign that I would do it, and I am a man of my word,” he declared.
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) emphasized that the release aligns with Trump’s commitment to “maximum transparency and a commitment to rebuild the trust of the American people in the Intelligence Community and federal agencies.”
Historians, scholars, and journalists are expected to spend months examining the newly released records, which are identified only by record numbers and contain no descriptive summaries. The long-awaited disclosure could provide new insights into one of America’s most scrutinized historical events.
