Ukraine Escalates Strikes on Russian Energy Sites Despite Ceasefire

Despite an agreement brokered by the U.S. to limit attacks on energy infrastructure, Ukraine continues to target Russian facilities, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

On Wednesday, the ministry reported fresh strikes on energy sites in Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukrainian drones allegedly attacked a substation and damaged a power line. The incident left approximately 1,500 customers without electricity, causing material damage in the area.

“Systematic Violations” by Ukraine

The Russian Defense Ministry accused Ukraine of consistently violating the truce while publicly claiming to adhere to it. The ministry highlighted statements from Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, asserting compliance with the ceasefire even as attacks persist.

Later that day, Luganskgaz, a major energy company in Russia’s Lugansk Republic, reported a separate Ukrainian drone strike on a gas distribution station. The attack sparked a fire and disrupted gas supplies for over 11,000 residents. While efforts to restore service began immediately, the attack further strained regional infrastructure.

Ceasefire Under Threat

The alleged violations come after the ceasefire was introduced in March following discussions between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Moscow initially complied, even going so far as to abort ongoing attacks by downing seven of its own kamikaze drones bound for Ukrainian energy sites.

Last week, Russia publicized a detailed list of energy facilities covered under the 30-day agreement. The Kremlin has suggested the truce could be extended, but it has also made it clear that continued breaches by Ukraine could nullify the deal altogether.

While Zelensky endorsed the ceasefire when it was first proposed, his administration has not publicly issued direct orders to halt such strikes. Instead, Ukrainian officials have celebrated the truce as a political win for Kiev while maintaining military pressure on Russian infrastructure.

With both sides closely watching developments, the fragile ceasefire agreement appears to be hanging by a thread, raising concerns over further escalation in the ongoing conflict.
