Trump Wants Ukraine Conflict Resolved Quickly, Says Bolton

Former U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton has claimed that President Donald Trump aims to remove the Ukraine conflict from his political agenda and may pursue a peace deal that could favor Russian President Vladimir Putin. Bolton made the comments during an interview on Going Underground with journalist Afshin Rattansi.

Bolton, who served under Trump during his first term but was dismissed in September 2019 after 18 months, has had a contentious relationship with the former president. Trump later described Bolton as a “nutjob” and said hiring him was one of his “biggest mistakes.” Notably, one of Trump’s initial actions after his inauguration on Monday was to end the security detail provided to Bolton due to alleged threats from Iran.

Bad News for Kiev?

According to Bolton, Trump’s return to the White House could signal trouble for Ukraine. He cited the president’s recent threats to cut off U.S. military assistance to Kiev unless it engages in peace talks with Russia.

“The new administration is bad news for Kiev,” Bolton said, adding that Trump views the Ukraine war as a problem inherited from his predecessor, Joe Biden. “He wants a deal to take this word ‘Ukraine’ off his table. He sees it as Biden’s war. He wants it resolved and doesn’t want it complicating his agenda,” Bolton explained.

A Kremlin-Friendly Peace Plan?

Bolton expressed concern that the terms of a potential settlement could align with Russian interests. He pointed to Vice President J.D. Vance’s campaign statements, which suggested a peace plan that Bolton argued “could have been written in the Kremlin.”

“I think Putin and the Kremlin would be very happy with a deal where they retain the occupied Ukrainian territory, a ceasefire is declared, and NATO denies Ukraine membership,” Bolton stated.

The former adviser also suggested that Trump’s approach to foreign policy, which he believes centers on personal relationships with world leaders, could make him susceptible to manipulation. “Putin sees Trump as someone easy to influence, someone who responds to flattery. He’ll look to exploit Trump’s belief that international relations hinge on his personal rapport with foreign heads of state,” Bolton said.

Russia’s Perspective

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently expressed optimism about potential collaboration with the U.S. under Trump. Speaking on Friday, Putin said Russia and the U.S. could find “many points of contact” on pressing issues, including the Ukraine conflict. He also described Trump as “trustworthy” and recalled their past interactions as “pragmatic” and “business-like.”

As the situation unfolds, both Kiev and Washington’s allies are likely to closely monitor how Trump’s stance on Ukraine might shift and what it could mean for the ongoing conflict.
