The United States and Canada have a longstanding dispute over softwood lumber trade, with the U.S. alleging that Canadian lumber benefits from unfair subsidies due to its sourcing from Crown land, which lowers production costs compared to U.S. operations on private land.

The homebuilding industry has expressed concerns that additional tariffs could negatively impact housing affordability by increasing construction costs. Lumber prices have already surged recently, contributing to inflation and affecting home construction and prices.
