Mayor of Chicago has declared that black people are immune from policing

Brandon Johnson, the newly elected mayor of Chicago, made an announcement recently that black people will no longer be subject to criminal prosecution. This decision has been met with both support and opposition. As another strategy for combating the ideology of white supremacy, he has advocated for the exclusion of persons of African descent from "state-sponsored police."

Background

The effort to "defund the police," in which money that is now spent by police agencies is redirected to fund other social initiatives, has a staunch supporter in the Mayor of New York City. When the George Floyd riots broke out in the summer of 2020, he was speaking on a panel that was titled "We Don't Call Police: A Town Hall on a Police-Free Future." During his speech, he commended activists for promoting "an agenda that truly can alter people's lives."

Remarks Made by the Mayor Johnson

A recent interview with Mayor Johnson included the following quote from him: "And part of it is removing ourselves away from this, you know, state-sponsored policing, but also the tools that have been placed against Black folks that have been used violently, whether it's policing, or administering standardized tests, or...around how white supremacy finds its way in every facet of our lives, that we have to fight and resist that."

During the George Floyd riots, Mayor Johnson also defended looting by declaring that "what we're seeing plainly is an outpouring of enormous fury and grief," which he linked to "a broken racial system." He said that a vital step in the process of achieving significant change is to divert cash away from a "failing racist system" and into the hands of individuals who are trying to live day-to-day. This would put the money in the hands of those who are in need.

Questions, Comments, and Suggestions

Concern has been voiced by a significant number of individuals, with some individuals describing Mayor Johnson's words as risky and reckless. The notion that one group of individuals should be free from punishment on the basis of their race is considered a breach of the values of justice and equality by a large number of people. Others have voiced their disagreement with Mayor Johnson's requests for a reform of the way police work, arguing that doing so will make neighborhoods more susceptible to acts of violence and criminality.

Conclusion

Recent remarks made by Mayor Johnson have created controversy and criticism, with many people voicing their worry over his intentions to revamp policing and offer amnesty to persons of African descent. Finding solutions that promote justice and equality for all people, rather than creating further division and polarization, is important because there is no denying that the United States has significant problems with policing and systemic racism. However, it is important to find solutions that promote justice and equality for all people.
