On Saturday, February 8, 2025, at approximately 6:23 p.m. local time, a powerful magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the Caribbean Sea, centered about 200 kilometers south-southwest of George Town in the Cayman Islands, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The quake prompted tsunami warnings and advisories across several countries in the region, including Jamaica, Cuba, Mexico, Honduras, and Haiti. Authorities in these areas urged coastal residents to move inland and seek higher ground as a precaution. However, these alerts were later lifted as the threat diminished.
As of now, there are no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties. Officials continue to monitor the situation and assess any potential impacts.
