Ah, August 2021—what a delightful time to be alive! As the world spun on its axis, our ever-charming Prime Minister Justin Trudeau graced us with some good ol’ vaccine wisdom. With the air thick with tension and uncertainty, he stepped up like a superhero in a spandex suit—minus the spandex, of course.
“Everyone needs to get vaccinated,” he proclaimed, like a modern-day Moses parting the seas of misinformation. Anti-vaxxers, he warned, were the villains in this epic tale, putting “us all at risk.” Yes, because clearly, the only thing more dangerous than a global pandemic was a gathering of unvaccinated folks who probably just binge-watched conspiracy theories on YouTube.
But wait! It gets juicier. “They are putting at risk their own kids,” Trudeau intoned dramatically, “and they’re putting at risk our kids, as well.” I mean, nothing screams “concerned leader” quite like a game of parental hot potato where the stakes are, oh, the future of humanity. How very noble of him to take on this burden, as if the parents of anti-vaxxers hadn’t already weighed the pros and cons of immunizations between swigs of organic kale juice.
And let’s not overlook the pièce de résistance: “If you want to get on a plane or a train in the coming months, you're gonna have to be fully vaccinated.” Ah, yes, the “no jab, no journey” policy! A brilliant plan to ensure that families don’t have to worry about unvaccinated miscreants lurking around, planning their next trip to the land of airborne germs. Because who needs free will when you have the promise of a crowded airplane full of vaccinated people, right?
Trudeau went on to assure us that the government would work closely with provinces and territories “who want to move forward on vaccination certifications, on vaccination passports.” Let’s take a moment to appreciate the magic of bureaucratic lingo. “Vaccination certifications” sounds a lot like a fancy diploma you might earn after completing an intense course on how to stay safe during a pandemic. Meanwhile, “vaccination passports” are the new golden tickets to travel—because nothing says “freedom” quite like a government-issued document.
So, as we sat in the sweltering heat of August, with Trudeau’s words echoing in our ears, we couldn’t help but wonder: will the anti-vaxxers finally see the light, or will they keep holding their ground, fortified with their kale juice and conspiracy theories? Regardless, one thing is for sure: Trudeau was ready to save the day, armed with a syringe and a smile, while the rest of us waited eagerly for our new travel passes. Welcome to the era of vaccine mandates—because nothing says “we’re all in this together” quite like making travel contingent on your medical history!
