The World of Tomorrow

Is America Ready to Ditch Private Cars? A Look at the Future of Transportation

So, are we all ready to say our heartfelt goodbyes to our beloved gas-guzzlers and embrace a car-less utopia? As we eagerly await the day our cars are officially deemed "bad" by the experts, let's all remember that while we may be on the brink of a transportation revolution, we'll still need a plan for those unexpected late-night ice cream cravings. Perhaps the future holds a teleportation app that zaps dessert directly to our doorsteps. Until then, let's enjoy the ride and keep our fingers crossed for a traffic-free, equity-filled, and eco-friendly tomorrow!

In a rapidly changing world, the Biden administration has set its sights on a bold vision for the future of transportation in America. Spearheaded by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, this vision aligns with the World Economic Forum's 'Great Reset' agenda, aiming to address pressing issues like climate change and systemic inequities. This article delves into the administration's commitment to transform the way Americans get around, emphasizing the need for sustainability, equity, and a departure from the traditional private car ownership model.

Reimagining Transportation: A Paradigm Shift

Transportation Equity Committee: The Driving Force

Pete Buttigieg recently appointed 24 new members to his Advisory Committee on Transportation Equity. Comprising seasoned professionals, including Obama appointees, this committee holds the key to a fundamental shift in the American transportation landscape.

Andrea Marpillero-Colomina, a prominent "spatial policy scholar," asserts that "ALL CARS ARE BAD" due to their environmental consequences. While her stance doesn't advocate for the complete removal of cars, she strives to shift the nation away from its heavy reliance on private vehicles. Her mission? To encourage innovative, environmentally sustainable, and equitable alternatives to our car-centric policies.

Veronica Davis, a self-proclaimed "transportation nerd," contributes to this committee with her perspective on systemic racism within the transportation sector. Her belief that cars perpetuate these systemic issues highlights the need for change. Davis aims to revolutionize transportation and address the divides created by cars, advocating for inclusivity and equality in transportation.

Oliver Sellers-Garcia, the Green New Deal director for Democrat Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, brings his expertise in multimodal transportation to the table. Boston's Green New Deal program calls for a transition away from cars and a focus on sustainability through a variety of transportation options.

Government Commitment to Equity and Sustainability

President Joe Biden's administration is committed to pursuing equity across all sectors, including transportation. An executive order issued in 2021 requires federal agencies to identify and address policies that create "systemic barriers" in minority communities. This commitment extends to the transportation sector, with a focus on promoting equity in agency programs, policies, regulations, and activities.

Electric Vehicles: A Piece of the Puzzle

While electric vehicles (EVs) have gained momentum as an eco-friendly alternative, they are not a one-size-fits-all solution. Marpillero-Colomina emphasizes that simply replacing gas-powered cars with EVs won't solve all our problems. To achieve true sustainability, we must look beyond the power source and explore comprehensive solutions.

The Pandemic's Influence on Transportation

The COVID-19 pandemic has transformed the way we work and commute. Buttigieg's agency has recognized the potential of telework in reducing "commuting miles" and vehicle emissions. As remote work and virtual engagements become more prevalent, we have an opportunity to reshape transportation habits.
