The Indian Army has claimed that Pakistani troops engaged in "unprovoked" firing along the disputed border between the two nations, prompting a retaliatory response.
On Wednesday, the Indian military stated it had "responded effectively" after Pakistani forces allegedly crossed the Line of Control (LoC), violating a long-standing ceasefire agreement between the nuclear-armed neighbors.
According to a report in the Indian Express, an Indian Army official revealed that the military action followed a mine explosion near the border, which occurred as Pakistani troops were allegedly attempting an intrusion across the LoC. “This was followed by unprovoked firing and ceasefire violation by the Pakistani army. Indian troops responded effectively in a controlled and calibrated manner,” stated Defence Spokesperson Lt Col Suneel Bartwal. He assured that the situation remains “under control and is being closely monitored.”
Citing sources, Indian media outlets reported that several Pakistani soldiers were killed in the Indian Army’s retaliatory fire.
This incident marks the first officially confirmed ceasefire violation by Pakistan in recent months, according to India Today. Similar cross-border exchanges were reported in the Krishna Ghati sector of the LoC in Poonch district, Jammu and Kashmir, in February.
Lt Col Bartwal reaffirmed the Indian Army's commitment to maintaining the ceasefire agreement reached in February 2021. He emphasized the importance of “strict observance of all agreements, understandings, and ceasefire protocols along the Line of Control and all other sectors.”
The Kashmir region has long been a flashpoint of tensions between India and Pakistan, with both nations claiming sovereignty over the area. The dispute dates back to 1947, following their independence from British rule, and remains a major source of conflict between the two countries.
This development comes just ahead of Indian Home Minister Amit Shah’s scheduled visit to Jammu and Kashmir next week. It also coincides with an ongoing security operation against militants in the Kathua district of Jammu. Reports indicate that two militants were recently killed in an encounter, while security forces continue to search for three more in the surrounding dense forests. Multiple paramilitary forces have been deployed, and the operation remains active, according to ANI.
As of now, Islamabad has not issued an official response regarding the latest border incident. In February, during Kashmir Solidarity Day, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged India to engage in dialogue over the Kashmir issue.
