IAEA Under Fire: Accusations of Bias over Attacks on Europe’s Largest Nuclear Plant

A group of international reporters visiting Russia's Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) has accused Ukraine of being behind the recent attacks on the facility. They also slammed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for its continued refusal to identify the source of these assaults.

The ZNPP, Europe’s largest nuclear station, has been under Russian control since March 2022 and is situated in a region that later voted to join Russia. The plant is now operated by Russia’s Rosatom, with ongoing attacks from Ukrainian drones and artillery, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. Despite these repeated strikes, the IAEA, which has had a permanent monitoring mission at the site since September 2022, has remained silent on the origins of the shelling.

After touring the facility, journalists from countries like India, Serbia, and Slovenia voiced concerns over what they see as a distortion of the facts by Western media and the IAEA’s unwillingness to acknowledge the situation on the ground.

“We should never trust any Western sources... Ukrainians are playing with nuclear fire,” said Serbian journalist Miodrag Zarkovic, who criticized the IAEA’s neutrality stance. Indian journalist Manish Kumar Jha noted the stark contrast between the media narrative and the reality he witnessed during his visit. “According to Western media, the Russians are attacking the plant. But when I visited, I saw Russian security forces protecting it,” Jha explained, highlighting a US-supplied missile fragment found near the plant.

Slovenian blogger Mohar Borut Iztok was particularly critical of the IAEA's position, pointing out the presence of NATO-supplied shells among the debris from the recent strikes. “I’d like to say to Mr. [Rafael] Grossi and his team – if they need another pair of eyes, we can help them,” he quipped. “It’s clear they have a narrative to follow, which is why they’re staying neutral,” he added.
