Canada Responds with Tariffs Following US Trade Restrictions

In a firm response to US trade measures, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced a 25% tariff on American goods, following the imposition of significant trade restrictions by US President Donald Trump.

"Tonight, I am announcing that Canada will respond to the US trade actions by implementing a 25% tariff on $155 billion worth of American products," Trudeau declared at a press conference on Saturday.

The first phase of the tariffs, affecting $30 billion worth of US goods, will take effect on Tuesday, with additional measures rolling out in 21 days to provide Canadian businesses time to adjust. Trudeau emphasized that the tariffs would be extensive, impacting everyday items such as alcohol, fruits, vegetables, clothing, and footwear. Ottawa is also considering "non-tariff measures," which may involve limiting critical minerals, energy procurement, and other trade relationships.

"We will stand firm for Canada," Trudeau stated, urging citizens to support local businesses. "We will ensure that our countries remain the best neighbors in the world."

Earlier on Saturday, President Trump announced a 25% tariff on nearly all Canadian goods, citing concerns about illegal drug trafficking and immigration.

Mexico Also Responds to US Tariffs

The White House justified the tariffs, claiming that Canada plays a central role in the ongoing fentanyl crisis in the US and accusing the country of failing to address the flow of illicit drugs. The US president framed the tariffs as necessary to address what the administration considers a "national emergency" posed by illegal drugs and immigration, particularly fentanyl.

In an attempt to avoid the tariffs, Canada introduced a $1.3 billion spending plan to bolster border security and combat drug trafficking. However, Trump dismissed the plan, stating on Friday that "there is nothing Canada can do right now" to prevent the new tariffs.

Economists have warned that this escalating trade dispute could lead to increased consumer prices and disruptions to the economies of both nations.
