On February 27, 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice released the first phase of declassified files related to Jeffrey Epstein, the late financier and convicted sex offender. Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that these documents, termed "The Epstein Files: Phase 1," primarily consist of materials that had been previously leaked but were not formally disclosed by the government. The release aims to enhance transparency regarding Epstein's criminal activities.
The disclosed documents include flight logs, an address book, a list of masseuses, and an evidence list detailing over 150 items, such as nude images, massage tables, and sex toys. Despite prior indications of significant revelations, the files did not present new information and largely contained content already accessible to the public.
Critics have expressed disappointment over the lack of fresh insights. Attorney General Bondi has criticized the FBI for allegedly withholding additional records and has demanded their release, emphasizing the need for transparency while also protecting the identities of over 250 victims associated with Epstein.
The Justice Department has indicated that further documents will be released in subsequent phases, with ongoing efforts to balance public interest and victim confidentiality.
