A soldier from Australia has been charged with committing war crimes in Afghanistan

Oliver Schulz, an Australian soldier, has been charged with murder by the Australian Federal Police for the death of a civilian in Afghanistan in 2012. The incident took place in 2012.

Schulz is a member of the prestigious Special Air Service (SAS) Regiment, which was responsible for the majority of the combat in Afghanistan. The Office of the Special Investigator (OSI), which was established in 2021 by the Australian government to determine whether or not criminal charges should be brought in relation to possible war crimes that had been identified in the 2020 Brereton Report, is responsible for the investigations that led to the prosecution of the defendants.

According to the findings of the investigation, there is "reliable evidence" to suggest that Australian soldiers were responsible for the deaths of 39 Afghan civilians and detainees in the period between 2005 and 2016. In the latter part of this year, Schulz's trial is anticipated to get underway.

The Australian Defense Force (ADF) is only at the beginning of what is sure to be a drawn-out and painful procedure since the OSI is examining between 40 and 50 other suspected war crimes perpetrated by Australian soldiers in Afghanistan.
